Additional tests

All your fertility tests in the shortest possible time

Annual gynaecological examination

 Includes:

    • Gynaecological examination
    • Smear test
    • Breast examination. Imaging techniques (mammography and breast ultrasound) will be prescribed as medically indicated.

The gynaecological examination can be done in our clinic with any of our gynaecologists at the Instituto de Medicina EGR. They attend both private and medical companies´ patients from  Monday to Friday, morning and afternoon. In most cases all can be done in one day, and the results will be ready in 7-10 days.

 

 

Culture

 

 

The aim of cultures is ruling out the presence of infections that can reduce the fertility of the couple. 

A vaginal swab is carried out in the woman looking for any bacteria or fungi, and an endocervical swab looking for gonococcus, mycoplasm and chlamydia. It can be done at any day of the cycle (except during the period). No appointment is necessary, although it is advisable to call on the day, before going to the clinic.

An urethral swab is carried out in the man looking for gonococcus, mycoplasm and chlamydia. In the clinic we will give you the instructions to take the sample yourself. If the test is done on the same day of the sperm sample, it has to be taken after ejaculation. If it’s done any other day, no appointment is needed.

The tests are quick, simple and painless for both women and men. Results are available in 7-10 days.

Endometrial Biopsy

 

The endometrial biopsy is carried out introducing a small cannula through the uterine cervix to obtain a sample of the endometrium. It can be performed in the consultation room.

It studies the endometrial response to hormonal levels in the second phase of the menstrual cycle (day 21 to 25 of the cycle), and determines any inflammatory alteration which could affect the implantation of an embryo.The test is performed in cases of recurrent miscarriages, implantation failure or inflammatory intrauterine pathology.

It is necessary to ask for an appointment. It can be done from Monday to Friday morning or afternoon. The test can produce mild abdominal discomfort, so 5-10 minutes rest is recommended after the biopsy. Results will be available in 7-10 days.

Hysterosalpingography

It is an X-ray of the pelvis, taken after the injection of a radio opaque product through the uterine cervix, in order to picture the uterine cavity and the fallopian tubes.

It allows identifying any obstruction o damage of the fallopian tubes, as well as alterations of the uterine cavity.

This test must be carried out from day 7 to 10 of the menstrual cycle.

Nos permite identificar si las trompas están obstruidas o dañadas y si la cavidad uterina muestra una imagen normal.

Esta prueba debe realizarse del día 7º al 10º del ciclo menstrual en un Departamento de Radiología. En la consulta le informaremos sobre los hospitales que ofrecen este servicio para que pueda pedir cita. La prueba puede producir ligeras molestias durante su realización.

Histerosonography

 

It is a transvaginal ultrasound carried out after the injection of a physiological solution in the uterine cavity through the cervix.

The liquid is introduced into the uterus slowly, allowing observation of alterations in the uterine cavity (e.g. polyps). This test is carried out between the 7th to the 10th day of the cycle.

It is necessary to ask for an appointment. It can be done from Monday to Friday, morning or afternoon. The test can produce mild abdominal discomfort, so 5-10 minutes rest is recommended after the histerosonography. Results are available immediately and are explained by the doctor after the ultrasound in consultation.

 

Histeroscopy

 

It is a visual study of the uterine cavity for the diagnosis and treatment of alterations within.

It is carried out by introducing a light and a camera through the uterine cervix. This exploration can be carried out in consultation (with local anaesthesia), or in the operating theater; by itself or together with a laparoscopy (with general anaesthesia).

If it needs to be performed in the operating theater, it is coordinated with the gynecologists at EGR Institute of Medicine. The surgery is performed in the Hospital Nisa Pardo Aravaca, although hospitalization is not usually required. There is no waiting list for this test.

 

Laparoscopy

 

A laparoscopy consists of inserting a light and an optic camera  through a small incision in the navel, to view the uterus, the ovaries, the fallopian tubes and the pelvic cavity in order to study all gynaecological structures. It is a brief intervention under general anaesthesia and normally carried out in an outpatient manner.

This procedure can also be used to eliminate possible adherences between tissues or other pathologies which could affect the woman’s fertility.

This test will be coordinated with the gynecologists at the  EGR Institute of Medicine. The surgery is performed in the Hospital Nisa Pardo Aravaca, although hospitalization is not usually required. There is no waiting list for this test in our clinic.

 

DNA Fragmentation in sperm

 

The DNA Fragmentation test shows damages in the genetic material present in sperm. This test is carried out using a semen sample. Several studies have demonstrated that an ejaculation with a larger proportion of sperm with fragmented DNA can be related to male infertility (no pregnancy, recurrent miscarriages, successive failure in IVF cycles…).

This test is performed on a semen sample obtained by masturbation. It is recommended to obtain the sample in the clinic, where we will provide you with a suitable space. Three to 7 days of sexual abstinence are required.

It is necessary to make an appointment directly with the IVF laboratory and let the embryologists know if you have had fever (more than 38.5ºC) in the last three months because this can affect the results.

The test can be performed from Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Results are available in 2-3 working days.

 

Sperm FISH analysis

 

 

The FISH (Fluorescence in situ hybridization) test is an analysis used to detect possible alterations in sperm chromosomes. This test is indicated in the case of altered spermiogram  or male karyotype, in repetitive miscarriages, or in implantation failures.

During the formation of the spermatozoa in the testes, errors can occur that will give rise to sperm with an extra copy of a chromosome (disomy), without a chromosome (monosomy) or with all chromosomes duplicated (diploidy). If any of these abnormal spermatozoa, fertilize the oocyte, the result could be the non-implantation of the resulting embryo or miscarriages.

The number of chromosomes to be studied (3, 4, 5 or 9 chromosomes), the number of counted spermatozoa (from a few hundred to thousands) and its realization in an automated (computer) or manual (by an operator) way, determines the reliability and quality of the result.

In URH García del Real, we collaborate with an external genetics laboratory with wide experience in this technique (Genomic Systems).We analyze the largest number of chromosomes (9) possible, through an automated system that looks at 10,000 sperm. We, thus, obtain reliable and reproducible results, in the shortest possible time.

This test is performed on a semen sample obtained by masturbation. It is recommended to obtain the sample in the clinic, where we will provide the sterile container required, and there is a specific room for obtaining this type of samples. A sexual abstinence of 3 to 7 days before the test is required. It is necessary to ask for an appointment  directly with the staff of the IVF Laboratory. This test can be done Monday to Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The results will be available in 3-4 weeks.

 

 

 

Recesive genetic diseases test

 

 

 

The test is a blood analysis that detects the presence of mutations which can be cause of recessive genetic diseasesIt analyzes more than 4,000 mutations associated to more than 200 recessive genetic diseases with different impact in the quality of life of the patients, including variants with especially high incidence in the Mediterranean area.

The result of a person is compared to that of the other member of the couple allowing the, so called, “genetic compatibility test”If both are carriers of the same mutation, the couple will have a 25% odds of having a child with such disease. This test can be performed in sperm or oocytes donors with the objective of choosing a donor that will offer the minimun risk of conceiving children with any recessive genetic disease. 

Any doubts before the test, or once the results have arrived, can be asked in a genetic consultation.

The test is performed on a blood sample from Monday to Friday from 8.00 to 18.30. There is no need to be fasting and it is not necessary to make an appointmentThe results will be available in 3 weeks.
